The weather continues to be sunny and warm. Perfect for Planting Day tomorrow at The Farm Institute. Those of us who have rented plots for the season are going to meet for the first time and plant our gardens. I've got to go to the nursery in the morning to pick up all my cool weather vegetables. We are supposed to have showers on Sunday, so I'm glad nature is cooperating as I am new to vegetable gardening.
There are lots of exciting activities going on this weekend on the Island. Felix Neck Volunteer Day is tomorrow from 9 AM -12 PM. It's a great outing for the family and a way to meet your neighbors while helping out a wonderful organization.
The First Congregational Church of West Tisbury is having its Annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday the 27th at 2 PM. Small animals are allowed in the sanctuary and larger ones will be blessed on the lawn. All pets must be leashed.
Local writer and historian, Tom Dresser, will be discussing his latest book from 4-6 PM on Sunday at Featherstone Center for the Arts. I've been to several of Tom's talks in the past and they are always entertaining. He will also be signing his book "Mystery on the Vineyard, Politics, Passion, and Scandal on East Chop".
And finally for those of you who have been watching "Dancing with the Stars", it is your time to shine. Ballroom Dancing classes are offered at Nathan Mayhew Seminars in Vineyard Haven. You can learn the Samba at 6 PM and then dance from 7-9 PM. This is a welcoming group--when I've gone, my reservations have quickly left me as the teachers are extremely patient and the other dancers are very encouraging. If you're on the fence, don't hesitate to go!
Have a great weekend!
The weather has been breathtaking! Beautiful for the past six days with no let up in sight. I went to pick up the mail last week and saw a sign announcing the reopening of "Backdoor Donuts" at the MV Gourmet Bakery. For those of you who are new to the Vineyard, Backdoor Donuts is a twenty-year tradition where visitors and locals alike can buy fresh donuts from the back door of this Oak Bluffs bakery from 9 PM-12:30 AM. It is always hard to decide whether to get the Cinnamon Bun or the Apple Fritter, but you can't go wrong either way. We always walk to pick them up and eat them on the way home hoping that the trek will burn up some of the calories from the oversized, but-well-worth-it, treats. A few years ago, the tradition was stopped briefly due to health and noise concerns so the "donut war" was taken to the OB selectmen. One local celebrity begged for the donut sales to be reinstated with the plea "to keep the Vineyard wierd." Except for that brief pause, the donuts are back. If you want to go, the bakery's back door opens onto Reliable Market's parking lot behind Circuit Ave.
Enjoy!
Today was another beautiful day on the Vineyard. Bright, sunny, and warm. Loaded the three dogs in the car and drove up-island to Menemsha to stroll on the beach and soak in the rays. Reminded me of summers with friends eating lobster dinners at Menemsha Beach and watching the sunset while everybody applauded nature's evening show. Speaking of lobster, I can't wait for the lobster rolls at Grace Church starting May 2nd. They serve one of the best lobster rolls on the Island and during the peak of the season the line winds down the sidewalk, so go early or call ahead and place your order.
Enjoy your week!
